The Transfiguration of Durga

PERFORMANCE NOTES

The Transfiguration of Durga is based on Hindsutani classical music, moving from an improvisatory alap section to a rhythmic jhalla. It features meend, an ornamental technique in Hindustani and Carnatic music that involves bending pitches. The text in the electronics part ranges from simple counting in Hindi and Urdu to a speech by Pakistani PM Musharraf: "You must understand the environment in Pakistan. This has become a moneymaking concern. A lot of people say, 'If you want to go abroad and get a visa for Canada or citizenship and be a millionaire, get yourself raped." The piece begins firmly situated in Raga Durga, but moves in further harmonic complexity as the electronic text becomes radicalized
